Taxco is famous for the silver craft-work that was revitalized by William Spratling and his team of local Mexican silversmiths in 1929. His movement became world renowned due to its use of exquisite pre-Columbian motifs and the creativity and excellent workmanship of his silversmiths. Visit the Spratling Ranch for an in-depth view of past and current silvermithing and purchase silver work currently being produced by its master artisans.
The picturesque, cobblestoned “Pueblo Magico” of Taxco is located amid steep hills and surrounded by lush semi-arid forests. The town is as rich in silver as it is in nature, culture and history. Taxco was formerly known as Tlachco, which means “ball game.” It was a settlement initially inhabited by the Tlahuicas, a tributary society of the Aztecs. But by the eighteenth century, the city’s future was in the hands of Jose de la Borda, known as the “Phoenix of the Rich Miners of America” for his discovery of an important silver deposit. The town by then had been resettled by the Spanish. Santa Prisca, Taxco’s main church, was built during this period (1759), and is one of the finest examples of Mexican/Spanish baroque architecture.
On the drive back to San Miguel, enjoy lunch in the charming town of Metepec, near Toluca. Metepec is famous for its pottery and “tree of life” ceramic artists. Visit Metepec’s Artisan Market and have an opportunity to purchase unique bowls, platters, or an intricate “Arbol de Vida” ~ Tree of Life sculpture.
